How To Care for Your Tile and Grout

How to Care for Your Ceramic Tile

Purchase a good quality dust mop and sweep your ceramic tile floors daily. This is especially important in new installations where the grout has not fully cured. Make sure to have your grout sealed with a protector . Dirt, mud, and sand tend to ground into the grout mortar from heavy foot traffic.

Dirt collecting carpet mats should be placed in frequently used entrances and shaken out weekly. Bristle brush mat on outside and walk offf mat in inside entrance.

We do not recommend the use of floor waxes as they can be difficult to remove from ceramic tile floors. As long as your floor is properly sealed and maintained, you should find no need for these products.

Shower stall and tub enclosures should have proper ventilation. Stagnant water breeds stain causing mildew as well as other fungi.

Many tile cleaners are acid based and their use should be limited. Always read the manufacturers label to find out. All acids, no matter how weak, will etch marble surfaces. Natural marble is commonly installed as thresholds in doorways and is also installed in window sills and shower curbs. In addition, avoid any cleaner that contains harsh abrasives.

For yellowing in grout use hydrogen peroxide and agitation with brush.

Mop or sponge your tile down a couple times a week. Mix capfull of dishwashing liquid per 4 liters of hot water. Mop up excess water and allow to dry. Buffing with dry towel will help reduce swirls and residue. Microfibre works great.

Preventative Carpet Maintenance

The secret to good looking, healthy carpeting is preventative maintenance.

The best way to control dirt inside your home is to keep it from entering in the first place. There are a lot of things we can track into our homes. Dirt, sand, grease, smoke, soot, car exhaust, pollutants, and pollens. To stop these from entering your home you’ll need to perform some outside preventative maintenance. This begins with sweeping the sidewalks, driveways and possibly washing greasy oils found the floor of you garage under the vehicles.

The next line of defense is mats. You should have a mat outside your door that is bristley to dislodge any mud and dirt from the soles of shoes. Inside the door should be another mat or entrance rug of smoother surface to absorb water, moisture and the remaining small dry particles. Pet owners may consider having a towel nearby especially in wet weather to wipe paws clean. Vacuum the mats often to keep them working effectively.

Pollutants in the air filter through your carpet. The carpet traps them so you don’t breathe them over and over. But what happens when that trap gets full? Your family starts breathing dust mite debris, pollens, pollutants, fungus, spores, bacteria and a long list of other really gross stuff. Once your carpets natural filtering ability gets full, it is time to call a professional Vancouver carpet cleaning company for your health’s sake.

Clean every 6-12 months and you will breathe easier.

The fact is, clean your carpets frequently, when traffic lanes first start to appear, and they will last longer, look better, and your home will be happier and healthier.

Removing Pet Stains and Odours

Pet accidents happen. You might be wondering are they removable? As an owner of a Vancouver carpet cleaning company I am often asked this question.

Pet stains are one of the stains carpet manufacturers will not warranty so you need to be informed with some techniques to deal with them. There are a few variables to consider.

There are a few variables that will determine if you will be successful.

  • Is your carpeting synthetic fibre or natural fibre?
  • How new is your carpeting?
  • Was it protected the last ime is was cleaned?
  • Does natural sunlight hit the area where the pet stain is?

Here are some tips offered by a Vancouver carpet cleaner:

  1. Absorb as much of the pet soiling as possible with a vacuum that allows for wet extraction or white terry cloths or towels. Careful with coloured towels as there is a chance of colour transfer from towel to carpet.
  2. Ideally a Bissell like vacuum that sprays and vacuums will allow for fresh water rinsing prior to applying a pet treatment chemicals.
  3. After absorbing or rinsing as much of the pet stain as you can its time to apply a pet treatment solution.
  4. Start with an enzyme based spotter. Enzymes digest organics and help with odours. You want to recreate the soiling condition by saturating affected area. Let the product dwell as much as possible, time is your friend here. You can even place some plastic wrap over the area so the enzyme does not evaporate or dry.
  5. The 30 mins later or next day, absorb or rinse area. If there is some yellowing left the next step is to use hydrogen peroxide.
  6. Test in inconspicuous area like closet corner to ensure hyrogen peroxide does not bleach carpet. Your local pharmacy will have some 3.5% hydrogen peroxide. You can start with a 50/50 mix. Full strength can be used if yellowing still remains.
  7. Rinse area after allowing hydrogen peroxide to dwell for at least 10 minutes.

Are Carpet Protectors Worth The Investment?

Unfortunately, consumers are  probably as much confusedy about carpet protectors as they are about cleaning. Uneducated, uninformed, and sometimes downright unscrupulous carpet cleaners cause a great deal of confusion by misinforming  or intentionally misrepresenting the product.

A nylon stain-resist carpet is made with two protective properties: The first is an acid dye blocker that is basically a clear dye that fills the extra dye sites in a fibre. This helps to keep “foreign” dyes (such as red dye in a beverage) from penetrating the carpet fibre. The second property is called a “fluorochemical”. It is commonly known as 3M Scotchguard ® or DuPont Teflon ®. This treatment helps keep spillage from actually getting to the acid dye blocker, but its biggest job is to resist dry soil.

By resisting dry soil, less soil is embedded into the carpet. This  allows the dry soil to release from the carpet much easier when you are vacuuming. Making sure that you have a sufficient amount of protector on your carpet will help keep the soil from bonding to the carpet. Once it bonds to the carpet, it acts like sandpaper on your traffic area. Carpet manufacuturers recommend reapplication of protector when your carpet in 2-3 years old. Once the traffic area yarns are broken down, there is no way to bring them back to their original state.

2 Primary Ways That Protector Is Removed From A Carpet:

1.  Regular foot traffic.  Over a period of 6 months to 2 years depending on the traffic, a significant amount of protector can be removed from your traffic areas and needs to be reapplied.

2.  High alkaline cleaner. Uneducated, uninformed and sometimes downright unscrupulous carpet cleaners use harsh chemicals on the carpet that will strip its protection. If one of these rascals has been in your house, you may want to have the carpet re-protected.

4 Mistakes Cleaners Make In Applying Protector:

1.   Not using high quality protector. Discount protectors are not as effective and sometimes void the warranty of the carpet.

2.  Not using a dedicated container. Using the same container for carpet protector as other cleaners can contaminate the carpet protector making it gummy and ineffective.

3.   Not applying the product properly.  Some cleaners either under apply or over apply the protector. Under applying it doesn’t allow for complete penetration on the carpet yarns. Over applying it causes the carpet to become overly stiff and crusty.

4.   Not grooming the carpet. For the best performance, the product should be groomed into the carpet for maximum penetration. This ensures contact with all surfaces of the carpet yarn and proper distribution and drying. I thoroughly groom the protector into the carpet pile.

5 Reasons You Should Always Get Carpet Protector:

1. Reduces permanent stains.  A great looking carpet can be ruined by an ugly spot. Unprotected carpet doesn’t repel spillage as well as protected carpet. Being able to remove spots and spills more effectively, you can avoid permanent staining.

 2. Helps save your traffic areas from becoming destroyed.  Traffic area soil is very abrasive and cuts carpet yarns like a knife. This damaging soil can easily bond to an unprotected carpet. By applying protector, you will increase the life of your carpet dramatically. When you vacuum your protected carpet the soils will release from the carpet pile much more effectively.

3. Make spots easier to remove.  The easier a spot is to remove, the less cleanly you will have to use. The less agitation you will have to use, and the less time it will take. Many spots can be removed easily with just water.

4. Makes your next professional cleaning more effective.  Having protector applied to your carpet will enhance your next cleaning. More soil will be removed the next time your carpeting is professionally cleaned.

5. Helps avoid costly service calls.  Although you want to call us out to handle any spot you cannot remove immediately, carpet protector helps you remove more spots than you could without protector. You may be able to save a minimum charge by removing the spot yourself.

So is carpet protection worth the investment?

  • Fibre producers know it works
  • Carpet mills know it works
  • 3M Scothguard knows it works
  • Dupont knows it works
  • Any now you know it works

An another couple examples of how protectors work can be seen in the auto industry. Wax on vehicles allow water to bead and run of and allow for years of that showroom look. How about those non-stick pans you use when you cook?

Ask your professional carpet cleaning company to provide you with a FREE demonstration. Your carpeting represents a big investment, so make sure you protect your investment by having carpet protector reapplied after each carpet cleaning.

How To Care For Your Area Rugs In Vancouver, BC

As an owner of a Vancouver carpet cleaning company this is a question I am often asked. The following information will help you better care for your area rugs.

  1. Rotation – To insure even wear, your area rug needs to be rotated once a year. Depending on the location, traffic, you may want to consider rotation every six months to two years.
  2. Vacuuming – Area rugs, like most carpeting, should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dirt that can be abrasive to the fibres and foundation. It will help  restore life to the fibers. Careful not to vacuum the fringes with your beater bar! Use the end of a vacuum hose from your canister or upright vacuum.
  3. Padding – A quality pad is recommended to be used under your rug becasue it  helps protect it from dirt, wear, and slippage. There are different types for rugs on carpet, and rugs on hardsurfaces with 5-20 years life expectancy before they dry out.
  4. Spot and Spill Procedures – It’s best to make sure that you safely and immediately clean up spots and spills before they set:
  •  First, absorb the excess liquid by blotting with a clean white towel or wet/dry vacuum. Do not brush  or rub the stain becasue you run the risk of opening up the fibre and allowing further penetration of the spill into the fibre.
  • Hopefully your carpet cleaner has left you with a professional spotter bottle after your last cleaning that you can use. If not, spot-clean with a mild detergent-white vinegar-water solution. Do-not over wet.
  • Rinse area thoroughly with water and a small amount of  white vinegar. Avoid wetting the rug’s backing.
  • Blot dry until most of the moisture has been absorbed by stepping on the white towel.
  • Allow to air dry. A fan or cool hair dryer can aslo be uese to speed up the drying process.
  • For stains that do not come out using these methods, ask our cleaning specialists  for more aggressive procedures involving hydrogen peroxide and odourless mineral spirits.

How to Care for Your Upholstery In Vancouver,BC

How to Care for Your Upholstery

General Information

Rotate all loose cushions frequently to assure even wear. Vacuum dust & dirt from all fabric, cracks & crevasses. By far, Fabric Protection is the best possible way to extend the life of your upholstery. Read the short section on how fabric protection works to find out why.

  • Vacuum often to reduce grit that can cause abrasion.
  • Reverse loose cushions weekly for even wear.
  • Protect from the sun. Ultraviolet light can cause deterioration.
  • Keep Pets off of furniture. Pet’s boby oils rub off and are very difficult to remove.
  • Use caution with clothing such as Blue Jeans. Fabric dyes can transfer onto upholstered furniture.

All upholstered furniture will become soiled through use. Most spills & soil on fabric protection treated upholstery will clean easily and quickly provided that the proper cleaning procedures are followed. A fabric protection application is not an absolute impenetrable barrier and improper cleaning methods can damage both the fabric and the treatment.

  1. Blot (don’t rub) spills immediately with a clean absorbent cloth while spill is still fresh. Dried spills are more difficult to remove.
  2. Identify the cleaning code for your type of fabric. This is very important to determine the type of cleaner to use.
  3. Always read & follow the instructions on the cleaning agent.
  4. Use distilled water with the cleaning agent if water is called for (W & WS Codes Only)
  5. Pretest any cleaner on any fabric in a hidden area. Check for Color fastness and fabric compatibility.
  6. Keep a small spill small. Work lightly,  blotting from center to the edges. “Feather” the edges by dampening edges irregularly and blotting quickly to avoid rings.
  7. Quickly dry a cleaned spot using a small fan or blow dryer on low.

Fabric Protection

Choosing to apply fabric protection is the best possible way to protect your new upholstered furniture and keep it looking new.

Treated Upholstery will:

  • Last Longer
  • Look Better longer
  • Clean easier

The fabric protection treatment is a spray applied to all surfaces of the upholstered item. The application “wicks” into the fibers of the fabric creating a protective barrier against soil and stains.

Fabric Protection Treatment

  • Has no smell & is non-allergenic
  • Does not change the look of the fabric
  • Does not change the feel of the fabric

Not only does a fabric protection treatment create a barrier against stains and spills, it has been shown to provide a barrier against the dirt and dust particles that cause excess abrasion and can cause premature fabric wear

How to Care for Your Carpet In Vancouver, BC

How to Care for  Your Carpet

When it comes to maintaining your carpet, one of the most critical areas of focus is the traffic areas. If ground in soil is not removed on a regular basis, the traffic areas will begin to wear excessively. The dirt is extremely abrasive against the fibers of the carpet as you walk back and forth on it. The second area of focus, of course, is spot removal. You must react to “danger” spots immediately. Red wine, red beverages, urine, blood, etc. can cause a permanent stain if not treated immediately. Listed below are the steps that you must take to properly maintain your carpeting.

Warranty
Copies of specific warranties on your carpet purchase may be available from your carpet retailer. Stain resist warranties can vary from 5 to 20 years. ALL STAIN RESIST WARRANTIES REQUIRE REGULAR CLEANING AND IMMEDIATE SPOT REMOVAL.

Vacuuming
Vacuum your carpet often. Once or twice a week at least. Vacuuming removes the sharp soil that can cut and slice the fiber causing premature wear. Much of this soil is not visible to the eye. Vacuum before the carpet looks soiled. Remove any loose particles such as loose food, leaves, pieces of crayon, bugs, etc. as these items can cause a spot on the carpet.

Professional Cleaning
As a general rule, professional cleaning by a professional, certified firm should take place about once per year. For extremely heavy traffic areas, cleaning may be required more often. Proper professional cleaning will not leave a sticky residue behind and can be done as many times per year as needed. MANY STAIN RESIST WARRANTIES REQUIRE PROFESSIONAL CLEANING EVERY 2 YEARS. Professional cleaning removes the damaging soil from the traffic areas that vacuuming has not been able to remove. WARNING: UNINFORMED CARPET CLEANERS MAY VOID THE WARRANTY, BE VERY SELECTIVE WHICH COMPANY YOU HIRE.

Spot Removal and Interim Cleaning
Immediate spot removal is key to a clean carpet. Great care also must be taken in how spot cleaning is performed. When a carpet is new, or has sufficient protector on it, plain tap water will remove many spots. However for those spots that will not move easily with water, you must use a spot cleaner. Select a spot cleaner that is recommended by the carpet manufacturer or your trained, certified professional cleaner. Most spot removers that are purchased over the counter leave too much soap residue and can cause yellowing. Avoid using foam carpet cleaners or any product that is not made specifically for carpet.

Apply spot cleaner sparingly to white terry cloth and gently massage spot causing it to transfer into the cloth. Never pour spot cleaner directly on carpet. If the product that you are using seems to cause the spot to re-soil over a few week period, discontinue use. Any spot that you are not able to remove, and for pet urine or feces, call your professional cleaner immediately.

Protective Coatings
Residential carpets are treated with stain resist properties and soil resistors known as Dupont Teflon or 3M Scotchguard. After a period of 2 to 3 years, some of the soil-resistor wears off. At that point you should consider having a professional carpet cleaner re-apply the treatment after professional cleaning. The soil resistor will help the soil slide off of the carpet easier when vacuuming, spots will be easier to remove, and professional cleaning will be more effective.

How To Select A Professional Carpet Cleaning Company In Vancouver, BC

HOW TO SELECT
A
Professional Carpet Cleaning Company

What distinguishes one carpet cleaning company
from another?

This checklist will ensure that
You have asked
The right questions:

A Checklist of Questions To Ask:

 Do They Have Good References?
Our company is considered by many as one of the most reliable carpet cleaning companies in the area. We are often referred by some of the most seasoned professionals in the carpet industry. Our references are available upon request.

 What Kind Of Experience Do They Have?
We have cared for the finest of carpets and rugs. We have handled many specialty items and seen many unusual situations. Whether the carpet is natural or synthetic, our experience makes us one of the most experienced cleaners in the area.

 Are They Well Educated In Their Field?
Sadly, most companies in our industry do not invest in educating themselves in their field.
We regularly attend educational courses, certification schools, conventions, and study trade journals and books related to our work. We are abreast of cutting edge technology and changes that regularly occur in our industry.

 What Systems Do they Use?
Many cleaners use outdated equipment with components that do not work properly. At our company, you can be assured that we use state-of-the art equipment. The machines that we use are the most advanced systems available today. Our equipment does not overwet the carpet. You can expect maximum soil removal and the pile of the carpet will be “standing tall” again.

 Do They Use Top Quality Products?
Our vans are stocked with only the very best products from top manufacturers. We refuse to use discount products that tend to leave sticky residues behind and discolor the carpet. You can be assured that our products are effective, efficient and safe for your carpet, the consumer, and the environment. If a spot can be removed, our products will remove it.

 Do You Get What You Bargain For?
Never select a carpet cleaning company based on price. Carpet cleaning is not as cheap as some would like for you to think. Their technique is to advertise a low price to get in the door, so that they can push their low quality, ineffective goods at higher prices than the real professionals charge. Quality carpet cleaning is not cheap, but it will extend the life of your investment and care for your carpeting in a way that will save you money in the long run.

 Do They Guarantee Their Work?
After having an uninformed, uneducated, or downright unscrupulous carpet cleaner in your home, the hardest part is getting them back to fix the problem. At our company, we offer a 100% money-back guarantee. We do not want to have anyone in our community that feels that they paid us for something they did not get.

 Do They Offer A Referral Program?
We want to reward you for sending customers to us. For each new customer that you send to us, we will send you a 10% referral certificate for what they spend with us the first time. You may use the referral certificate for cash or services. And remember that we guarantee our work; so help your friends, neighbors and co-workers enjoy high quality carpet cleaning.
